Who was Chip Reese?

Chip Reese was one of the true legends in the world of poker. Although he was best known for his success in cash games he did have a number of good results in tournaments as well. Chip Reese passed away in 2007 and that brought to the end the career of one of the best poker players of all time.

Chip ReeseChip Reese got his start playing poker at a very young age when he started playing against other kids on his street in Dayton Ohio. As a teenager he started playing in real games and actually proved to be quite successful at it. After graduating from high school Reese went to Dartmouth College to study economics and while he was there he continued to play poker both at the frat house and in casinos. The plan after he graduated from college was to attend law school at Stanford. That plan would end up changing dramatically.

After graduating from College Chip Reese was driving across the country to start law school at Stanford when he stopped in Las Vegas to visit a friend. He promptly lost all of his money playing black jack and had to take a job with his friend’s father to earn some cash. At the same time he started playing some poker and eventually would come with five hundred dollars so that he could enter a tournament. Reese ended up winning the tournament and pocketing fifty thousand dollars. At that point law school went out the window and Chip Reese stayed in Vegas to play poker. He would eventually play some of the best players in the world in one game and end up winning over $300 000, at this point he knew that his future was playing poker.

For a time Chip Reese would play in some of the biggest tournaments in poker however he would eventually take time away to raise a family. During this time he earned his income with sports betting becoming known as one of the best baseball handicappers in the world. He proved to be enormously successful at sports betting and would eventually win millions of dollars at it. However the world of poker would eventually pull him back.

In the early years of the twenty first century poker became a very popular event on television and it was actually Reese’s children that would get him back into the game, they wanted to see him play on television. For several years Chip Reese would finish well in some of the biggest tournaments in poker. However in 2007 Chip Reese would die of a heart attack at the age of just fifty six. During his life Chip Reese was a legendary poker player and widely regarded as the best seven card stud player in the world. His passing was a major loss to the world of poker.
