Poker is rather unique compared to most of the other games that are played in casinos in that it is a game of skill as much as luck. That means that there are some traits that the good players have that makes them so good at the game. If you have a desire to play professionally you should have these personality traits as they are usually the difference between being a winner and being a loser.
Probably the most important trait that you need to have if you are going to be a poker player is that you need to be able to control your emotions. This is because if you can’t it is going to be pretty easy for your opponents to read you and when this happens you are not going to have much chance of winning. A good poker face is critical and this requires that you be able to keep your emotions under control so that it isn’t obvious to everybody how good your hand is.
Another big trait that you have to have if you are going to be a successful professional player is the ability to make decisions with limited information. This is something that a lot of people really struggle with. You need to be able to decide what you are going to do based on what you think that your opponents are going to do even though you don’t know what their cards are. Most people find it very difficult to make decisions when they don’t have all of the information which in poker is going to happen on every hand.
Self control is another important trait that you need to have if you are going to become a great poker player. Most player’s feel that they need to play every hand they are dealt and this is why they never become great players. The professional player will likely fold more hands than he actually plays because he knows that you have to pick your spots if you are going to be a great player. While you have to avoid playing bad hands you have to do it in a way that does not become predictable which makes it much more of a challenge.
One last personality trait that you have to have if you are going to be a great professional poker player is the ability and desire to constantly learn new things (look at players like Daniel Negreanu and Lex Veldhuis, always schooling themselves!). There is always something new to be learned in the game of poker so if you are going to be playing professional this is something that you are going to have to be good at. A lot of people are not really that interested in putting in the effort to learn new things and for them it is probably best to consider a career other than being a professional poker player.
